The coloured portion of the this map represents an
area that can broadly be called Sydney's Inner East.
It is bounded by the CBD, Eastern Suburbs, Harbour
and Redfern/Moore Park.

There are strong external geographic, cultural and
social reasons for delimiting the area like this.

Internally however, a default border has formed
along Oxford Street. This is an historical artifact
caused by its location between two police commands,
two suburbs and until recently, two councils.

The recent amalgamation of council failed to address
the issue, as City of Sydney saw fit to once again
split the area into two of its Local Area Plans:
City East to the north of Oxford, and Inner East to
the south.

This border is arbitrary at worst and incorrectly
located at best. There are compelling geographic,
cultural and social reasons to shift it north to
William Street.

William Street is a cold, shady wind tunnel, located
in a gully with an overwhelming luxury car and car
hire business mix.

Oxford Street is a sunny, bustling main street with
over 500 existing small businesses. It is a natural
town centre and should not have be relegated to the
sidelines as it has been for the last ten years.

Sadly, in 2005 this divide was set in $24,000,000 worth
of stone by the RTA and City of Sydney council.
